Pamprum–First Light road to be closed from Sept. 7 for GARID drainage works

Pamprum Junction will be closed to traffic from September 7, 2026, to pave the way for the construction of a major underground stormwater drain along the Dr. Buzia Highway.

The closure was disclosed by Project Coordinator of the Greater Accra Resilient and Integrated Development (GARID) Project, Dr. Kojo Ohene Sarfo, at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, August 26.

He said the closure forms part of the first phase of the traffic management plan for the construction of a 1.5-kilometre underground drain stretching from Pamprum Junction to First Light Junction.

The first phase, which includes the closure of the westbound carriageway from Pamprum Junction, is expected to run until the end of November 2026.

Motorists travelling from Kolibu-Mortuary Road, Graphic Road, Obeche-Bilamte Circle and Kwame Nkrumah Circle towards First Light and beyond will be required to use designated alternative routes.

“Given the scale and location of the works, temporary road closures along the section of the Dr. Buzia Highway will be unavoidable,” Dr. Sarfo said.

He said the traffic management plan had been developed in collaboration with the Department of Urban Roads and other agencies to ensure the safe and efficient movement of traffic throughout the construction period.

The drainage project is part of efforts to improve flood risk management within the Kaneshie enclave.
