Police deploy armoured vehicles to Nalerigu after unrest

The Inspector-General of Police has ordered the deployment of reinforcement teams and armoured vehicles to Nalerigu and nearby communities following incidents of civil unrest in the North East Region.
The security intervention follows the burning of two houses in the regional capital by some youth, alongside threats to destroy additional properties and harm residents, heightening fears of further violence.
Police say the deployment is aimed at restoring calm, protecting lives and property, and ensuring strict enforcement of a government-imposed curfew.
The Ministry of the Interior has placed Nalerigu and its environs under curfew from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., effective Thursday, December 18, 2025.
In addition to maintaining order within the town, the reinforcement teams are supporting the North East Regional Police Command to intensify patrols and enhance security along major highways to protect commuters and prevent the spread of unrest.
The Police Command has confirmed that investigations into the attacks and the burning of the houses are ongoing, stressing that all persons found to be involved will be arrested and prosecuted.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Robert Anabiik Anmain, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the North East Regional Police Command, said the police remain committed to safeguarding lives and property and will sustain security operations until calm is fully restored.
Meanwhile, the government has appealed to chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, the youth, and residents of the affected communities to exercise restraint and resort to peaceful means in addressing their concerns.
Residents have also been encouraged to cooperate with security agencies and comply with the curfew as efforts continue to stabilise the area and prevent further disturbances.
