GES assures parents of swift action on Savelugu SHS feeding concerns

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has responded to public concerns following the circulation of a video on social media alleging poor feeding conditions at Savelugu Senior High School.
It assured parents and the general public that the situation is being addressed and does not reflect the overall state of student feeding nationwide.
In a statement dated January 16, 2026, GES confirmed that its management had taken note of the viral video and had initiated investigations to establish the facts surrounding the incident.
“Management of the Ghana Education Service has sighted a video circulating on social media about an alleged food situation at Savelugu Senior High School,” the Service said.
GES emphasised that the quality of student feeding remains a top priority, warning that any form of mismanagement would be treated as a serious breach of standards.
“Management takes the quality of student feeding very seriously and prioritises quality feeding, viewing any form of mismanagement as a serious offence,” the statement noted, adding that such actions undermine government efforts to strengthen the school feeding system.
According to GES, student feeding in senior high schools has generally improved in recent years due to enhanced coordination between key institutions.
“Management acknowledges that the feeding of students has generally received a remarkable facelift, with an efficient collaboration between Buffer Stock and school heads,” GES explained.
Addressing public anxiety, GES assured parents that the situation at Savelugu Senior High School should not be misconstrued as a national challenge.
“Management wishes to assure the public, especially parents, that the incident at Savelugu Senior High School is an isolated case and does not reflect the overall feeding status nationwide,” the statement said.
The Service disclosed that investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the situation and to ensure accountability where necessary.
As part of measures to prevent a recurrence, GES announced plans to increase oversight across schools.
“In our continued commitment to ensuring quality feeding for students, the GES Monitoring Team will intensify its unannounced monitoring visits to schools,” the Service stated.
GES further urged school heads and other stakeholders to communicate challenges promptly.
“Stakeholders, and school heads especially, are urged to promptly report any peculiar challenges they encounter to management for timely intervention,” the statement added.
The statement, signed by Daniel Fenyii, Head of Public Relations at the Ghana Education Service, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to safeguarding student welfare and maintaining high standards across the education sector.
The response comes amid increased public scrutiny of senior high school feeding arrangements, with education authorities under pressure to ensure that students receive adequate nutrition to support effective teaching and learning.
GES reiterated that it remains focused on continuous improvement and pledged to take all necessary steps to ensure that feeding standards are upheld across schools nationwide.
