Dr. Amoakohene condemns Jacobu illegal mining violence

Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Frank Amoakohene has condemned violent clashes involving suspected illegal miners and police at Jacobu in the Amansie Central District.
In a public statement issued on Sunday, Dr Amoakohene described the incident as “unfortunate and avoidable,” following confrontations that reportedly led to the death of one person and injuries to others.
“I have been briefed on the unfortunate and avoidable confrontations that occurred between some suspected illegal miners at Jacobu and the Ghana Police Service,” he stated, noting that the situation had escalated beyond what should have occurred.
The regional minister expressed sympathy for those affected, extending condolences to the bereaved family and well wishes to the injured.
“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and sympathise with all persons affected by this incident,” he said, adding, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured, and I wish them a speedy recovery.”
Dr Amoakohene used the statement to issue a firm warning to the public, urging citizens to cooperate with security agencies and obey lawful instructions.
“I wish to strongly urge all citizens to at all times cooperate fully with law enforcement officers and not disregard lawful orders,” he stressed.
He cautioned that confrontations with police officers posed serious risks to lives and public safety.
“Citizens should under no circumstances confront the police or engage in actions that threaten public safety, as has been seen in the circulating videos,” the minister said.
While condemning the violence, Dr Amoakohene also commended the Ghana Police Service for its role in maintaining order under difficult circumstances.
“I wish to commend the Ghana Police Service for their continued efforts in maintaining law and order,” he noted.
According to him, the government remains firmly behind the security services in their operations.
“Government remains fully committed to supporting the Police and all security agencies in the execution of their lawful duties to protect lives, property, and public peace,” the statement said.
On accountability, the minister assured the public that investigations were underway and that the law would take its course.
“Investigations into the incident are ongoing, and I assure the public that the matter will be pursued to its logical conclusion,” he said, warning that “any persons found to have acted unlawfully will be dealt with in accordance with the law.”
Dr Amoakohene also appealed to traditional authorities, youth groups, and community stakeholders to help restore calm in Jacobu and surrounding areas, urging respect for lawful processes at all times.
