Police arrest former boxer Ayitey Powers over alleged death threat against NSA boss

The Accra Regional Police Command has arrested former professional boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, over an alleged death threat against National Sports Authority Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah.
The arrest was announced in a press release issued by the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, August 24, 2026.
According to the police, the 46-year-old former boxer was arrested in connection with an alleged threat of death made against Mr. Ampofo Ankrah.
The alleged threat is said to have been made on August 24, 2026, and was captured in a video that circulated widely on social media.
Police said the arrest followed investigations into the viral video in which the suspect allegedly issued the threat against the NSA Director-General. Reports indicate that law enforcement authorities had earlier been searching for the former boxer after the video surfaced online.
“The arrest follows a video circulating on social media in which the suspect is alleged to have issued the threat,” the police statement said.
The statement further disclosed that Michael Aitey Okai is currently in police custody and assisting investigators with ongoing inquiries into the matter.
“The suspect, Michael Aitey Okai, is currently in Police custody assisting with investigations,” the statement noted.
The police assured the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and to determine the appropriate legal action.
“The Accra Regional Police Command wishes to assure the public that investigations are ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged threat and to take appropriate action in accordance with the law,” the statement added.
The police have also urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information about the case while investigations continue.
