Tamale: GWCL MD provides free tanker services to ensure water supply during Ramadan

Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) is taking proactive measures to ensure residents of the Tamale Metropolis have uninterrupted access to safe drinking water during the upcoming Ramadan period.

Adam Mutawakilu, Managing Director of GWCL, has provided financial support for free tanker services to pre-position water supply for households across the metropolis.

During a working visit to the Northern Region, Mutawakilu observed that water levels at the Nawuni Treatment Plant in Dalun—the main source of raw water for Tamale—have been significantly reduced due to the dry season and sandwinning activities along the White Volta intake point. These factors could disrupt regular water supply during periods of high demand, such as Ramadan.

To address these challenges, Mutawakilu allocated funds to ensure tankers are ready to deliver water to residents, guaranteeing that households and businesses will have sufficient supply when the holy month begins.

As part of the visit, representatives from the contractor handling the White Volta intake expansion briefed the Managing Director and his team on the progress and scope of the work. The expansion is a key component of long-term plans to strengthen Tamale’s water supply system.

“Our priority is to ensure that every household in Tamale has access to water during Ramadan,” Mutawakilu said. Providing financial support for free tanker services is a practical step to address seasonal shortages and activities affecting our water sources.

Mutawakilu also met with staff at the regional office to review the distribution plan, directing the team to ensure equitable service in line with the region’s prepared schedule.

In line with GWCL’s commitment to community engagement, the MD paid a courtesy visit to Lamashegu Naa, His Royal Highness Iddrisu Mohammed, at his palace. The visit reinforced collaboration with local authorities and respect for traditional protocols in planning water distribution.

This initiative underscores GWCL’s proactive, community-focused approach to water management, combining short-term measures, emergency planning, and long-term infrastructure development to guarantee uninterrupted access to safe drinking water for Tamale residents.
