Government ends curfew Karaga, maintains strict weapons ban

The government has officially lifted the curfew imposed on Karaga township and its surrounding communities in the Northern Region, following a significant improvement in the security situation.

In a statement issued on Thursday, April 30, 2026, the Minister for the Interior announced that the decision was made on the advice of the National Security Council and enforced through an Executive Instrument.

The curfew, which restricted movement between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., had been introduced to contain rising tensions and restore calm in the area.

Authorities now say the situation has calmed enough to allow for its immediate removal.

In spite of this progress, residents are being urged to remain vigilant and uphold peace. Chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, and the youth have been specifically encouraged to exercise restraint and resolve disputes through non-violent means.

While movement restrictions have been lifted, some security measures remain in place. The government has maintained a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons within Karaga and nearby communities.

Officials have warned that anyone found violating this directive will face arrest and prosecution.

The curfew was part of broader efforts by authorities to prevent the escalation of conflict in the Karaga district and restore long-term stability.
