May Day: NHIA waives fees to expand healthcare access for workers – NHIA boss

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced a temporary nationwide relief package aimed at expanding access to healthcare, particularly for workers in both the formal and informal sectors.
In a May Day message, the Chief Executive of the Authority, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, revealed that the scheme has waived key barriers to enrolment and renewal as part of efforts to deepen coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
“Until 31st May 2026, the NHIA has waived processing fees, premiums, and the one-month waiting period,” he stated. “This means you can walk into any NHIS district office, register or renew your membership, and enjoy instant access to healthcare services at no cost.”
The intervention, announced to coincide with May Day, is being positioned as a strategic move to bring more Ghanaians—especially workers—into the national health safety net.
Dr. Bampoe emphasised that access to healthcare remains central to productivity and national development, noting that “a productive workforce depends on a healthy population.”
“At the National Health Insurance Authority, we understand that a productive workforce depends on a healthy population. This is why we remain steadfast in our mission to remove financial barriers to healthcare,” he said.
The NHIA boss further urged workers to take advantage of the limited window, warning against delays that could expose individuals and families to financial strain during medical emergencies.
“This is a limited window designed to bring more Ghanaians into the safety net of the NHIS. I urge you not to delay. Do not wait until illness strikes or an emergency arises,” he cautioned.
The announcement comes at a time when conversations around healthcare affordability and accessibility continue to dominate public discourse in Ghana. Stakeholders have long called for reforms to ensure that cost does not prevent citizens from seeking timely medical care.
Dr. Bampoe reiterated that ongoing reforms within the NHIS are guided by a core principle: “no worker in Ghana should be pushed into hardship because of the cost of healthcare.”
The NHIA says it will continue to collaborate with government, employers, and labour unions to strengthen social protection systems and improve working conditions across the country.
