2026 BECE: WAEC records seven exam malpractice cases on day one

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has recorded seven exam malpractice cases involving teachers and invigilators across Central, Bono, and Ashanti Regions.
Speaking in an interview with 3news on May 4, Mr Kapi, Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, said the cases were made up of three from the Central Region, two from the Bono, and two from Ashanti.
He explained that five involved mobile phone use, while two cases involved preparing answers to be shared with candidates during exams.
“It is quite strange because several appeals have been made. WAEC has done its part, regional offices have engaged stakeholders, and warnings have been issued,” he said.
Mr Kapi expressed concern about the repeated misconduct.
He added that three of those involved were not actively invigilating at the time, while the remaining four were serving as invigilators.
He also noted that the Director-General had stressed strict punishment for offenders, while the Education Minister had condemned examination malpractice.
Despite the incidents, he said the examinations have generally gone smoothly, although there were delays in the delivery of materials in parts of the Western Region.
“We have not had candidates denied the chance to write. The main challenge this morning was the late arrival of materials, but we expect improvements in the coming days,” he added.
