Bawumia prays for victims of Accra flooding

New Patriotic Party flag bearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed sympathy for victims of the devastating floods that swept through parts of Accra.

Dr. Bawumia shared the message on X following Monday’s torrential rains, offering prayers to affected families and urging the public to support ongoing emergency efforts.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the thousands of our people affected by the floods,” he wrote. “My deepest sympathies to those who have lost their loved ones, properties, and those who have been forced out of their homes.”

He appealed to residents to cooperate with authorities managing the emergency response and to observe all public safety directives.

“I urge citizens to comply with all directives issued by the Government and to cooperate fully with institutions mandated to address the situation,” Dr. Bawumia stated.

The former Vice President also called on emergency responders and relevant state agencies to intensify rescue and relief operations for residents trapped or displaced by the floods.

“I also urge the emergency services and all relevant authorities to do everything possible to reach those in need and assist them,” he said.

Expressing optimism despite the destruction, Dr. Bawumia added, “We will get through this difficult time by caring for one another.”

The flooding followed one of the most intense rainfall events recorded in Accra in recent years. About 140 millimetres of rain fell within a 48-hour period, causing rivers and drains to overflow and leaving several communities submerged.

The downpour inundated homes, businesses and critical road networks, disrupting daily life and forcing the temporary suspension of some commercial services, including banking operations in affected areas.

Among the worst-hit locations were Kwame Nkrumah Circle, Adabraka, Kaneshie and Tse Addo, where rescue teams used boats to evacuate stranded residents from floodwaters.

Major transport routes, including the Kasoa–SCC–Mallam highway, Weija, Achimota, Spintex and sections of the Airport Road around Shiashie, also became impassable, leaving many commuters stranded for hours.

Emergency agencies have continued rescue operations while authorities assess the extent of the damage and provide relief to displaced residents as the city begins recovery from the disaster.
