Reshuffle: James Agalga takes over as Majority Leader as Mahama Ayariga heads to Local Government

Builsa North Member of Parliament James Agalga has assumed the position of Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, following President John Dramani Mahama’s nomination of Mahama Ayariga as Minister-designate for the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

The leadership change was announced after the Presidency submitted Mr. Ayariga’s name to Parliament for prior approval as part of a ministerial reshuffle undertaken in accordance with Article 78(1) of the 1992 Constitution.

A statement signed by the Minister for Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said President Mahama had forwarded the nominations to Parliament through the Speaker for consideration.

Mr. Ayariga’s nomination brings an end to his tenure as Majority Leader, a role in which he steered government business on the floor of Parliament and led the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus.

His successor, James Agalga, is expected to immediately assume responsibility for coordinating the government’s legislative agenda and managing proceedings in the House.

A seasoned legislator and lawyer, Mr. Agalga has represented the Builsa North Constituency for several terms and previously served as Deputy Minister for the Interior under the previous Mahama administration.

As Majority Leader, Mr. Agalga will now lead the NDC caucus in Parliament and face Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin across the aisle during parliamentary debates, scrutiny of government business and negotiations on legislation.

The ministerial changes also saw Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings nominated as Minister-designate for the Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei reassigned to the Ministry of Defence, and *Ahmed Ibrahim* moved to the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources.

Mr. Ayariga’s nomination remains subject to parliamentary vetting and approval before he officially assumes office as Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.
