Kpong–Tema pipeline works completed, water supply to improve – GWCL MD

Water supply to parts of Greater Accra is expected to improve progressively after the completion of replacement works on weak sections of the Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines.
Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, announced that the replacement of the identified weak sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines had been completed on schedule.
The works were undertaken following the company’s earlier announcement of a temporary interruption in water supply to allow engineers and technical teams to replace deteriorated sections of the transmission system.
According to the Managing Director, water production has now resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant.
He said the transmission lines and reservoirs were expected to progressively fill as pressure builds up across the system, allowing more consumers in Greater Accra to receive water.
“Barring any technical hitches, we expect significant improvement in supply as the system stabilises,” he said in a statement posted on his official Facebook page.
The intervention was undertaken to address identified weak sections of the major transmission pipelines supplying water from the Kpong Treatment Plant towards Tema and parts of the eastern corridor of Greater Accra.
Infrastructure protection
Ghana Water Ltd had earlier explained that the maintenance was necessary to safeguard what it described as one of the country’s strategic water transmission systems.
The company said replacing the deteriorated pipeline sections would reduce pipeline bursts, minimise emergency shutdowns, improve operational efficiency and enhance the long-term reliability of water supply.
Mr Mutawakilu acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the temporary interruption and thanked customers across Greater Accra for their patience and cooperation during the exercise.
He also expressed appreciation to the company’s engineers, maintenance teams, contractors and technical personnel for completing the works despite technical and operational challenges.
The Managing Director specifically commended Maintenance Team Leader, Ing. Dr Hadissu Kappus Alhassan, General Manager in charge of Operations, Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, and their respective teams for their leadership during the exercise.
He said Ghana Water Ltd remained committed to addressing infrastructure challenges and improving service delivery to consumers.
The company had earlier advised affected customers to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the maintenance exercise and use available water judiciously.
