GWCL MD commends ECG for support during Kpong–Tema pipeline works

The Managing Director of Ghana Water Ltd, Adam Mutawakilu, has commended the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for supporting the timely completion of critical Kpong–Tema pipeline works.

Mr Mutawakilu said the ECG technical team worked closely with Ghana Water Ltd personnel, including through the night, to ensure the necessary works were completed and water production resumed promptly.

The works involved the replacement of identified weak sections of the 21-inch and 42-inch Kpong–Tema transmission pipelines, which have now been successfully completed on schedule.

In a statement posted on his official Facebook page, the GWCL MD expressed special appreciation to ECG Managing Director, Ing. Kwame Kpekpena, and the ECG technical team for their support during the exercise.

“Their team worked hand-in-hand with our personnel, including working through the night, to ensure that the necessary work was completed and that water production could resume promptly,” Mr Mutawakilu said.

He described the collaboration between the two public institutions as “a fine example of what strong collaboration between public institutions can achieve in the interest of the Ghanaian people.”

Following the completion of the pipeline works, water production has resumed at the Kpong Treatment Plant.

Mr Mutawakilu said the transmission lines and reservoirs were expected to progressively fill, with pressure building up to enable more consumers in Greater Accra to receive water.

“Barring any technical hitches, we expect significant improvement in supply as the system stabilises,” he said.

The maintenance exercise had earlier resulted in a temporary interruption of water supply to allow the deteriorated sections of the transmission pipelines to be replaced.

Ghana Water Ltd had explained that the intervention was necessary to protect one of the country’s strategic water transmission systems and improve the reliability of supply to customers in Tema and the eastern corridor of Greater Accra.

The company said the replacement of the deteriorated sections would help reduce pipeline bursts, minimise emergency shutdowns and improve operational efficiency.

Appreciation to technical teams

The GWCL MD also praised his engineers, maintenance teams, contractors and other technical personnel for their dedication and professionalism during the exercise.

He specifically acknowledged Maintenance Team Leader, Ing. Dr Hadissu Kappus Alhassan, and General Manager in charge of Operations, Ing. Michael Botse Baidoo, together with their respective teams.

Mr Mutawakilu said he had visited the work sites at various stages and witnessed the commitment of the teams to completing the exercise despite the technical and operational challenges encountered.

He also thanked customers and residents across Greater Accra for their patience and understanding during the temporary disruption in water supply.

Ghana Water Ltd had earlier appealed to affected customers to store adequate quantities of water and use available supplies judiciously during the maintenance period.

Mr Mutawakilu said he remained committed to working with staff and partner institutions to address infrastructure challenges and improve water services to consumers.
