Regional Executive Elections: African Electoral Institute commends NPP for proactive security measures

The African Electoral Institute (AEI) welcomes and fully supports the security arrangements announced by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of its ongoing Regional Executive Elections across the 16 regions of Ghana.

We note with satisfaction the statement by Mr. Ebenezer Doku, a member of the NPP Greater Accra Regional Elections Committee, on Eyewitness News on Friday, August 14, 2026.

According to Mr. Doku, the party, in collaboration with the Tema Regional Police Commander, Mr. Asiedu, has deployed a significant number of police officers to ensure the safety of delegates and maintain order. With 700 delegates expected, a minimum of 400 police officers will be on duty.

AEI further commends the NPP for:
1. Restricting bodyguards and large groups at voting centres to prevent congestion and potential disturbances.
2. Issuing a minimum of three observer accreditations to aspirants, to allow for limited representation without overcrowding.
3. Calling for cooperation from contestants and supporters to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

AEI believes these measures reflect best practices in internal party democracy and election security management. Limiting crowds, preventing unauthorized persons in inner perimeters, and deploying adequate security are critical to safeguarding the integrity of the process and protecting delegates.

As an organization committed to promoting credible, peaceful, and transparent electoral processes in Africa, AEI urges all political parties to emulate such proactive steps ahead of their internal and public elections.

We call on all NPP contestants, delegates, and supporters to fully cooperate with the security agencies and the Elections Committee to ensure that the regional elections are conducted peacefully and successfully.
