Update: Ashaiman tower repairs – GRIDCo schedules replacement for August 23

Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has completed the initial phase of repair works on the Ashaiman section of the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line.
In a statement issued on Sunday, August 16, 2026, GRIDCo said a team of its engineers undertook the preliminary repair works on the affected section of the transmission line.
“GRIDCo wishes to inform the public that it has successfully completed the initial phase of repair works on the Ashaiman section of the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line,” the statement said.
GRIDCo further disclosed that power had been restored to customers following the completion of the preliminary works.
“A team of GRIDCo engineers undertook the preliminary works on Sunday, 16 August 2026. Power has since been restored to customers,” the statement.
However, the company said the repair process is not yet complete, with the remaining phase involving the replacement of the affected transmission tower.
According to GRIDCo, the tower was affected following a welding explosion in July, which necessitated the ongoing repair and replacement works.
“The remaining phase of the work, which involves the replacement of the affected transmission tower following a welding explosion in July, will be undertaken on Sunday, 23 August 2026,” GRIDCo said.
The company explained that it would work with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to inform customers and communities that may be affected by the scheduled tower replacement.
“In collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), we will provide prior information to customers and communities in areas that may be affected by the planned works, including any associated power supply interruptions,” the statement noted.
GRIDCo said the advance information would help affected customers and communities prepare for any possible power supply interruptions that may occur during the exercise.
The company also assured the public that it remains committed to completing the tower replacement and ensuring the transmission line regains its full operational capacity.
“GRIDCo will continue to work diligently to complete the tower replacement and restore the full integrity, reliability, and resilience of the transmission line,” it stated.
The company described the ongoing work as critical to maintaining the reliability and resilience of the transmission infrastructure.
GRIDCo also expressed appreciation to the public for its cooperation and understanding as the repair works progress.
“We appreciate the patience, understanding and cooperation of the public as GRIDCo works progressively to complete this critical work,” the company said
