Elvis Darko raises concerns over market redevelopment plans

By Hubeyidatu Mumuni
Social commentator and analyst Elvis Darko has raised concerns over proposed market redevelopment projects, arguing that the issue is not the construction of modern market facilities but the lack of adequate alternative spaces for traders whose livelihoods could be disrupted during the process.
Speaking on the proposed redevelopment of markets on CitiFM, Mr. Darko said traders should not be portrayed as opposing development simply because they are concerned about being displaced. He explained that many traders depend entirely on their businesses for their livelihoods and could face serious financial difficulties if they are asked to vacate their trading spaces without suitable temporary locations.
He further questioned the rationale behind demolishing recently constructed and functional markets with public funds to undertake new construction on the same sites.
According to him, the government must incorporate a clear relocation strategy into market redevelopment plans to ensure that traders can continue their businesses while construction is ongoing.
Mr. Darko maintained that traders are willing to embrace improved and modern market facilities, provided their economic interests are considered in the planning process.
He therefore called for greater consultation between government, market authorities and affected traders, stressing that redevelopment should improve market infrastructure without unnecessarily disrupting the livelihoods of those who depend on the facilities.
