GAUA, TUSAAG suspend strike action pending further negotiations

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical Universities Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUSAAG) have suspended their strike action following renewed negotiations with stakeholders.
The decision was announced in a joint press statement issued on August 20, 2026, by the leadership of the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) and the Technical Universities Senior Administrators’ Association of Ghana (TUSAAG).
The two associations said the suspension takes effect immediately and is intended to create room for ongoing discussions aimed at resolving issues that led to the industrial action.
According to the statement, the decision followed what the associations described as a constructive engagement with the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), Vice Chancellors Ghana, and Vice Chancellors of Technical Universities Ghana.
The associations indicated that these stakeholders had committed to renewed and time-bound discussions on the concerns raised by members, prompting the temporary suspension of the strike.
“In the spirit of good faith and social dialogue, our two Associations have resolved to give this engagement the space it requires to yield results,” the statement noted.
GAUA and TUSAAG have therefore directed their members across affected tertiary institutions to resume normal duties while negotiations continue.
However, the associations stressed that the suspension remains temporary and is dependent on tangible progress being made during the engagement process.
They warned that they reserve the right to resume the industrial action if discussions fail to produce satisfactory outcomes within an agreed timeframe.
The statement specifically pointed to the role of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), indicating that the outcome of engagements involving the commission would be critical in determining the next course of action.
The leadership of both associations expressed appreciation to members for their unity, discipline, and commitment throughout the strike period. They also thanked the general public for its patience and understanding during the disruption caused by the industrial action.
The statement was jointly signed by GAUA President Rev. Amoah Kwaku Karikari and General Secretary Charles Kojo Aidoo, as well as TUSAAG President Stanley Akamiri Abopaa and General Secretary Jeremiah Awini.
