BoG Governor: We must channel diaspora remittances into productive investment, development

Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit 6 called for Ghana’s diaspora remittances to be channelled more effectively into productive investment, enterprise development, innovation, and job creation.
Speaking at the launch of the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre’s 2025 Annual Investment Report on Friday, August 21, 2026, Dr. Asiama said Ghana’s diaspora presented a significant opportunity to accelerate the country’s economic transformation.
According to Dr. Asiama, the 2025 remittance performance demonstrated the continued confidence and commitment of Ghanaians living abroad despite challenging economic conditions.
“The 2025 remittance performance is a testament to the confidence and enduring commitment of Ghanaians abroad, even amid a challenging global and domestic economic environment,” he said.
He explained that Ghana must now move beyond simply sustaining remittance inflows and find more effective ways of directing the funds towards activities that can generate jobs and support long-term economic growth.
“Yet, the challenge before us is not merely to sustain these flows, but to channel them more effectively into productive investment, enterprise development, innovation, and job creation,” Dr. Asiama said.
He said the Bank of Ghana had identified the development of suitable financial products as a critical gap in Ghana’s diaspora investment agenda and was working to address it.
“This is where the Bank of Ghana has a leadership role to play. We are committed to addressing what remains the missing link in our diaspora investment agenda: the development of trusted, innovative, and market-responsive financial products and solutions that inspire confidence, deepen engagement, and mobilise remittances towards national development priorities,” he said.
Dr. Asiama explained that the central bank was working with financial institutions, fintechs, investment partners, and other stakeholders to develop solutions that respond to the needs and aspirations of the Ghanaian diaspora.
He said the objective was to create an ecosystem that would convert diaspora savings into productive capital while strengthening trust and creating opportunities for Ghanaians abroad to participate in the country’s long-term economic development.
“The opportunity before us therefore extends beyond attracting investment commitments; it is about building a sustainable ecosystem that converts savings into productive capital, strengthens trust between Ghana and its global diaspora, and creates pathways for long-term economic participation,” he said.
The Governor urged stakeholders to contribute their expertise to the development of financial products that could eventually become a flagship national offering.
“Your insights, expertise, and partnership will be instrumental in shaping a suite of products and solutions that can be successfully taken to market and, ultimately, become a flagship national offering – one that mobilises investment, drives productivity, creates jobs, and contributes meaningfully to Ghana’s long-term economic transformation,” Dr. Asiama said.
He further noted that Ghana’s investment prospects were supported by its strategic position in Africa, its role as host of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, a young and entrepreneurial population, improving infrastructure, abundant resources and a growing digital economy.
Dr. Asiama said the country’s economic transformation must ultimately focus on ensuring that investments generate tangible benefits for citizens.
