Mahama: Women’s football has brought Ghana more success than men’s game despite lower investment

President John Dramani Mahama says Ghana’s women’s football teams have won more honours for the country than the men despite receiving fewer resources and support.

He made the remarks on Monday, September 8, 2026, when officials and players of Medeama Sporting Club and Nations FC paid a courtesy call on him at the Presidency ahead of their respective CAF inter-club competitions.

Addressing the teams, President Mahama described football as one of Ghana’s most effective tools for promoting the country on the global stage, noting that the sport has helped build Ghana’s international image over the years.

“Football is a very good branding instrument for any country. Soccer is followed by millions of people across the world, and many times when I travel, people identify Ghana because of football,” he said.

The President used the occasion to highlight what he described as the remarkable achievements of Ghana’s women’s national teams, noting that they have consistently delivered success on the international stage despite operating with fewer resources than the men’s teams.

According to him, the country must begin paying closer attention to women’s football and invest more in its growth.

“Our women’s teams have won more honours and brought more success to Ghana than the men’s teams, yet much of the investment and attention have gone to the men’s game,” he stated.

He pointed to the recent performances of Ghana’s female national teams, including qualifications for major international tournaments and successes at youth level, as evidence of the growing strength of women’s football in the country.

President Mahama said the achievements of the women demonstrate that talent exists across all levels of Ghanaian football and deserves equal support and opportunities.

He urged corporate Ghana and football administrators to broaden their support beyond the men’s game, arguing that strategic investment in women’s football could yield even greater results for the country.

The President also congratulated Medeama Sporting Club and Nations FC for earning the right to represent Ghana on the continental stage and encouraged them to serve as worthy ambassadors.

“We are proud of what you have achieved. As you go out there to represent Ghana, remember that you carry the hopes of the nation with you. Play with determination, discipline and patriotism,” he told the clubs.

Officials of the two clubs expressed appreciation to the President for receiving them and pledged to give their best performances in Africa.
