Ghana has moved from economic vulnerability to recovery – Mahama at UNGA81

President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted what he described as Ghana’s significant economic turnaround under his administration, citing improvements in growth, inflation, the national currency and public debt.
Addressing the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Thursday, September 24, 2026, President Mahama said the progress formed part of his government’s “Resetting Ghana Agenda”.
“Less than two years into my administration, through disciplined governance, fiscal prudence, and an uncompromising fight against corruption, Ghana has achieved a dramatic economic turnaround. Indeed, some circles describe it as the ‘Ghanaian miracle,’” he said.
According to President Mahama, the government’s macroeconomic stabilisation measures had restored growth, reduced inflation, stabilised the cedi and lowered the country’s public debt burden.
“Our macroeconomic stabilisation measures have restored growth, drastically reduced inflation, stabilised our national currency, and significantly lowered our public debt burden,” he stated.
He added that the recovery had been independently validated by multilateral financial institutions and major international credit rating agencies.
However, President Mahama stressed that improved economic indicators must translate into tangible benefits for ordinary Ghanaians.
“But macroeconomic indicators mean little if they do not translate into real improvements in our people’s daily lives. Economic growth must have a human face,” he said.
He said the government’s Big Push Programme would support infrastructure development through investments in roads, digital connectivity, schools and health facilities.
President Mahama also cited the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme and the soon-to-be-launched “New Ghana, New Economy” policy as key initiatives aimed at transforming Ghana into an industrial and high-productivity economy.
“We are incentivising round-the-clock commercial operations, driving value addition in agriculture and mining, and creating sustainable, dignified jobs for our vibrant youth and women,” he said.
Beyond the economy, the President highlighted social protection and healthcare initiatives, including the Free Primary Health Care Programme and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as MahamaCare.
He said these interventions were intended to ensure that economic growth translates into improved living standards and greater access to essential services.
President Mahama’s economic pitch forms part of his government’s broader “Resetting Ghana Agenda”, which places economic stabilisation, infrastructure development, industrialisation, job creation and social protection at the centre of its policy programme.
