Hawa Koomson returns to NPP leadership as National Women’s Organiser

Former Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson has been elected National Women’s Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), marking a political comeback for one of the party’s most prominent female figures.
Hawa Koomson secured victory at the NPP National Delegates Conference held at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on October 3, defeating Hajia Safia Mohammed in a two-person contest.
She polled 783 votes against her opponent’s 429 votes to win the position.
Her election was one of the key outcomes of the conference, which brought together 7,163 delegates from across the country to elect a new national executive team to lead the party towards the 2028 general elections.
The victory returns Hawa Koomson to a national leadership role within the NPP nearly two years after losing the Awutu Senya East parliamentary seat in the 2024 general election.
Despite that setback, she remained active within the party and campaigned vigorously for the women’s organiser position.
A former three-term Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson served in the Akufo-Addo administration as Minister for Special Development Initiatives before later becoming Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development. Her experience in government and party politics is expected to play a significant role in her new position.
In her new role, she will be responsible for mobilising women across the party’s structures, coordinating activities of the women’s wing and helping to strengthen grassroots participation ahead of future elections.
“This victory is for all NPP women across the country,” a jubilant Hawa Koomson told supporters after the results were announced.
She called for unity among party members and urged supporters of all candidates to work together for the party’s future.
“The contest is over. The task ahead is to unite and build a stronger party capable of winning power again,” she said.
