Parliament’s Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Etse Dafeamekpor, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting community-initiated projects as part of efforts to accelerate development across the country.
He said the government would continue to implement pragmatic policies and programmes aimed at improving living standards by creating an enabling environment for infrastructure expansion and human capital development.
Mr Dafeamekpor, who is also the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for South Dayi, gave the assurance at a durbar of chiefs and people of Agona Duakwa during the climax of this year’s Akwambo Festival in the Agona East District of the Central Region.
The week-long celebration was held on the theme: “The Foundation of Sustainable Development through Akwambo Festival.”
Addressing the gathering, Mr Dafeamekpor commended the people of Agona Duakwa for mobilising communal support towards the construction of a multipurpose community centre, describing the initiative as an example of collective responsibility in promoting local development.
He also described the festival as historic and urged residents to preserve their cultural heritage while making the celebration relevant to contemporary development needs.
The Majority Chief Whip called on residents to support their traditional and political leaders, particularly the NDC MP for Agona East, Queenstar Pokuaa Sawyerr, and other stakeholders working to advance development in the area.
On behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, he donated 500 bags of cement towards the completion of the multipurpose community centre.
The donation is expected to support the community’s efforts to complete the facility, which was initiated through communal contributions.
The MP for Agona East, Queenstar Pokuaa Sawyerr, disclosed that 20 young people from Agona Duakwa had been recruited into various security agencies.
She also pledged to ensure that all ongoing development projects in the town were completed within the government’s four-year term.
Providing updates on infrastructure, Mrs Sawyerr said work had commenced on an electricity extension project in the area.
She added that new classroom blocks for the Duakwa Islamic School, Salvation Army Basic School and other educational institutions had been completed.
The initiatives, she said, formed part of efforts to improve access to education and essential infrastructure in the constituency.
The Duakwahene and Krontihene of the Agona Nyakrom Traditional Area, Nana Kojo Amoakwa V, commended Richard Asiedu, Central Regional Chairman of the NDC, for supporting the Akwambo Festival and development initiatives in the community.
However, he appealed to Mrs Sawyerr to use her office to facilitate the completion of the Winneba Junction–Agona Swedru–Akim Oda trunk road.
He said completing the road would improve transportation and facilitate the movement of goods and services.
Nana Amoakwa also praised the government for the construction of the Agona Namawura–Agona Duakwa road and the reintroduction of the National Sanitation Day initiative to promote environmental cleanliness.
Mr Asiedu, who chaired the durbar, commended the chiefs and people of Agona Duakwa for demonstrating unity and supporting their Member of Parliament and the government’s development agenda.
He assured the community of the government’s continued commitment to supporting development projects in the area.
The celebration brought together traditional authorities, political leaders and residents to commemorate the Akwambo Festival while highlighting community participation, cultural preservation and infrastructure development as key priorities for the area.
