Africa Electoral Institute extends condolences to families of helicopter disaster victims

The Africa Electoral Institute has extended its condolences to the families of the eight men, including two Cabinet ministers, who passed away when a helicopter on which they were aboard crashed last Wednesday.

In a statement, the institute said it was grieving with friends, relatives, and the entire nation during this difficult period.

“The Africa Electoral Institute (AEI) extends its profound sympathy and heartfelt condolences to the families, colleagues, and the entire nation of Ghana following the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on Wednesday, 6 August 2025, in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region,” the statement signed by the organisation’s Director of Communications,

The victims of the gory accident included Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence, Alhaji Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Minister of Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation. The others are Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Aboagye, former parliamentary candidate, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

The institute maintained they stood “in solidarity” with the government, bereaved families, the Ghana Armed Forces and the entire citizenry “during this period of profound grief”.

The release continued: “Our thoughts and prayers are especially with those families enduring the unimaginable pain of this loss. We honour the memory of these brave public servants who dedicated their lives to the service of Ghana.”

On Sunday 10th August, 2025, two of the victims, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, both Muslims, were laid to rest in accordance with their religious tradition.

A state funeral will be held for all eight men on Friday 15th August, 2025 at the Black Star Square in Accra.
