Transport Unions give gov’t one-week ultimatum over deplorable Pokuase–Nsawam road

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of TUC, the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), and allied transport unions have given the Ministry of Roads and Highways one week to repair the deteriorating Pokuase–Nsawam road or face a nationwide protest.
According to the unions, the poor condition of the road is endangering lives, driving up operating costs, and slowing economic activity.
“This is not just a challenge for commercial transport operators but for all motorists using this critical corridor to the Eastern, Ashanti, and other northern regions,” they said in a joint statement.
The Pokuase–Nsawam stretch, part of the vital Accra–Kumasi highway, has become riddled with potholes and uneven surfaces, with inadequate drainage worsening the situation during rains. Drivers report frequent breakdowns, increased maintenance expenses, and shorter vehicle lifespans.
The unions expressed frustration that a previous assurance by the Minister of Roads and Highways to rehabilitate the road within six weeks has not been fulfilled.
“If no meaningful action is taken within one week, the GPRTU of TUC, GRTCC, and other commercial transport operators will park our vehicles and protest against the government until our concerns are addressed,” the statement warned.
They are urging motorists, commuters, and residents along the route to join the planned protest, calling it a civic responsibility to pressure authorities into action.
The unions warned that if the protest goes ahead, it could cripple public transportation nationwide, disrupt the movement of goods, and affect daily life across multiple sectors.
“This is more than a transport issue, it is a matter of public safety and economic survival,” the statement stressed.
