Asantehene warns against politicizing aircraft purchases

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has cautioned politicians against turning the procurement of presidential jets and military helicopters into a partisan issue. He said safeguarding human lives must take precedence over political debates.

“Enough of the politicising of the purchase of presidential planes and helicopters. Human lives are at stake here. We must invest to safeguard their safety and efficiency,” the Asantehene said.

He made the remarks at the Manhyia Palace on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, when the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, called on him to officially relay news of the August 6 military helicopter crash at Sikaman-Brofroyedru in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region.

The crash claimed the lives of all eight people on board, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. The victims also included Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna; former Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Samuel Sarpong; NDC Vice Chairman, Samuel Aboagye; Squadron Leader Peter Baafemi Anala; Flying Officer Manin Twum Ampadu; and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Expressing concern over the condition of Ghana’s current fleet, the Asantehene warned that many of the country’s military aircraft were no longer fit for sustained service. He said past efforts to procure a replacement had failed, and urged that a new acquisition be treated as a matter of national security and urgency rather than political convenience.

He extended his condolences to President John Dramani Mahama and the bereaved families, while calling for unity in addressing Ghana’s aviation and security logistics challenges. According to the Asantehene, investing in modern, reliable aircraft is not only essential for operational efficiency but also for the protection of the lives of those who serve the country.

Of the victims, Dr. Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna were buried on August 10, while the remaining six will be laid to rest on Friday, August 15, 2025.
