Ghana Armed Forces deny arrest of Brigadier General Michael Opoku

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has refuted widespread reports claiming that Brigadier General Michael Kwadwo Opoku had been arrested by security operatives for allegedly possessing ammunition.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, and signed by Captain (GN) V.A. Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations, the GAF stressed that Brigadier General Opoku remains an active member of the Armed Forces and “is not under arrest for any crime committed.”

“All enquiries from various Security Agencies and National Investigation Authorities have not corroborated the said publication of arrest,” the statement said. The Armed Forces further assured the public that any military officer found culpable of a crime would be subjected to due legal processes just like any other citizen.

The release also warned against the spread of misinformation and disinformation, urging the public to disregard the false reports.

Earlier today, Brigadier General Opoku’s legal team, led by Lawyer Gary Nimako Marfo, also dismissed the reports, describing them as defamatory and unethical. In a statement directed at Opera News, which first carried the story, the lawyers demanded a retraction and an apology.

“We act as solicitors for Brigadier General Michael Kwadwo Opoku and write pursuant to his instructions. Our client’s attention has been drawn to a defamatory publication on your online news portal in which you published that our client was arrested following a National Security Operation, which led to the discovery of ammunition,” the demand notice read.

The lawyers emphasized that their client “has not been involved in any such incident,” and condemned the publication as an attempt to link the respected serviceman to a stockpile of ammunition without any factual basis.

“It is unethical journalism for basic verification not to be carried out prior to the publication of such defamatory material online,” the statement added.

Both the Ghana Armed Forces and the legal team have therefore urged the public to treat the reports as false and unfounded.
