GHC2.3 million raised for children of victims of helicopter crash

The Children’s Support Fund, launched by President John Dramani Mahama to assist the children of victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, has raised a total of GHS 2,315,000.00.
Dr. Valerie Sawyerr, Senior Presidential Advisor on Governmental Affairs and Coordinator of the Fund, confirmed that the initiative has received strong support from corporate Ghana. “The Fund is already attracting significant backing, reflecting the commitment of individuals and organizations to support the children affected by this tragedy,” she said.
President Mahama announced the establishment of the Fund during the state funeral for the eight victims of the helicopter crash on Friday, August 15, 2025. He emphasized that the initiative is designed to provide long-term assistance, focusing on the education, welfare, and overall well-being of the children left behind.
The government expressed particular appreciation to Stanbic Bank Ghana, which contributed an initial seed donation of GHS 500,000. Other corporate contributors include Procus GH Limited, GB Foods Ghana, Sunda FM Manufacturing Ltd, Sage Distribution Ltd, Quantum Oil Terminals, Quantum LPG Logistics Ltd, Newgas Cylinder Ltd, and Quantum Terminals PLC.
Dr. Sawyerr noted that donations to the Fund could be made via Stanbic Bank Ghana Limited (Stanbic Heights Branch, Accra) using the following accounts: Ghana Cedi (GHS) Account: 9040013628372; US Dollar (USD) Account: 9040013628534. Cheques and bank drafts should be made payable to: CHILDREN SUPPORT FUND 6825. She added that a weekly publication of donor names will ensure transparency and accountability.

The Children’s Support Fund reflects the government’s dedication to honoring the sacrifices of the victims by safeguarding the future of their children. Contributions are expected to continue flowing in from individuals, institutions, and organizations committed to the welfare of the bereaved families.
The helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, claimed the lives of eight people, including senior government officials such as Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah and Environment Minister Murtala Muhammed, alongside three crew members. The tragedy, which occurred in the Adansi Akrofuom District of the Ashanti Region, prompted nationwide mourning.

The state funeral on August 15 saw attendance from President Mahama, senior government officials, members of the security services, traditional leaders, and grieving families. It was during this ceremony that the President unveiled the Children’s Support Fund, aimed at securing the education, welfare, and future of the children left behind.
