Bawumia contributed nothing financially to Eastern region 2024 campaign – Bryan Acheampong

Flagbearer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bryan Acheampong, has made a startling claim that he was the sole financier of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign during the party’s 2023 presidential primaries.
Speaking at a regional engagement with party delegates, the Abetifi MP and Minister of Food and Agriculture alleged that Dr. Bawumia made no financial input into his own bid for the NPP leadership, insisting that his personal resources sustained the campaign machinery.
“During Dr. Bawumia’s primaries in 2023, he did not bring a single penny into the Eastern Region,” Mr. Acheampong told the gathering. “I paid every single penny for him to become the flagbearer of this country. He didn’t pay a penny.”
He disclosed that constituency executives in the region received direct financial support through his efforts. “All the constituency executives, everybody collected $1,500,” he stated.
Mr. Acheampong further claimed that his financial commitment was not limited to the Eastern Region. According to him, he provided monthly contributions of GHS100,000 to 27 constituencies across the country, excluding six that he considered to have strong campaign structures.
Recounting a personal conversation with former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Ashanti Queen Mother’s funeral in Kumasi, he said the former President acknowledged his heavy role in bankrolling NPP campaigns. “In 2016, 2017, you said that I was the single largest contributor to you coming to power. You said it, and it is a fact. In 2024, I am telling you that I funded Dr. Bawumia more than I even funded Nana Akufo-Addo,” Mr. Acheampong stressed.

He explained that his decision to make these revelations was part of efforts to strengthen his credibility among party members as he pursues his own flagbearer ambition. “If I am lying, tell Upper East, so that they will go and tell the people that we were there when he told Eastern Region,” he declared, challenging anyone to contradict him.
The minister added that his disclosures had already been shared with party executives in 14 regions during his campaign tour, where he had consistently emphasized his contributions to the party’s growth.
