Police inspector shoots soldier in Bauchi

A clash between security operatives in Bauchi State has turned tragic after a police inspector allegedly shot a soldier during an operation in Futuk. Alkaleri Local Government Area.
The incident, in which a police inspector allegedly shot a soldier at a checkpoint, occurred when troops attempted to stop a truck suspected to be carrying minerals from the Yalo mining sites. The truck, believed to belong to a Chinese company, was reportedly being escorted by a police officer when the altercation took place.
Eyewitnesses said the confrontation escalated after the driver refused to stop, resulting in a heated exchange that ended with the police inspector allegedly shooting the soldier. The soldier was rushed to a hospital in Gombe State, where he was later confirmed dead.
Confirming the development, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, 33 Artillery Brigade, Major Atang Hallet Solomon, said investigations were ongoing to determine the immediate and remote causes of the clash. He emphasized that the relationship between the army and police remains cordial despite the unfortunate incident.
“Our relationship with the police remains cordial, and a joint investigation is underway to determine the immediate and remote causes of the incident,” Major Solomon said.
Major Solomon explained that the content and ownership of the truck could only be established after the investigations are completed.
He further revealed that while the truck driver managed to escape, the police inspector involved in the shooting has been arrested and placed in custody.
Meanwhile, the Bauchi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ahmad Wakili, noted that the Commissioner of Police was scheduled to visit the area for an on-the-spot assessment. He assured the public that more information would be released once the preliminary findings are available.
Authorities have appealed for calm as investigations continue, promising that both institutions will work together to ensure transparency and prevent a breakdown in cooperation between security agencies.
