70 private schools now on Free SHS policy – Education Ministry

The Ministry of Education has announced that 70 private senior high schools have been integrated into the Free SHS programme in the new academic year.

Deputy Minister of Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, who made the announcement, said the inclusion of these schools would expand access to candidates.

“This year, as part of the Free SHS programme, we are piloting 70 private SHSs,” Dr. Apaak explained. “At the time of school selection, only 21 private schools were available, but I am pleased to inform you that all 70 private schools are now accessible on the placement portal.”

He emphasized that the decision was aimed at broadening opportunities for students and easing the pressure on highly subscribed public schools.

“As a nation, we must acknowledge that while access to secondary education is expanding, the demand for certain top-tier schools remains higher than their available capacity,” he noted.

“It is therefore important that we strengthen all schools so that every Ghanaian child receives quality education, no matter where they are placed.”

Dr. Apaak also reminded parents and guardians that the school placement process remains free of charge.

“The Ministry of Education cautions parents and guardians against paying money to any individual, whether a Ministry official or a third party, for placement. Anyone soliciting payment must be reported immediately,” he warned.

According to the Ministry, out of 603,328 students who sat for the 2025 BECE, about 590,309 qualified for placement, with over 483,800 candidates already successfully placed in various institutions.

Over 100,000 were unable to be placed due to stiff competition and limited slots in their schools of choice.

The deputy minister noted that the ministry has established resolution centres at the district, regional and national levels in order to facilitate the addressing of concerns.

“In order to reduce the stress on parents and gurdians, resolution centres have been set up at the district, regional and national levels i.e. GES/ TVET district, regional offices with the GNAT hall in Accra being the national resolution centre,” Dr. Apaak said.

The Deputy Minister congratulated the candidates and urged communities to rally behind the students as they transition into senior high schools.

“Whether placed directly or through the self-placement portal, you have a clear and secure pathway to continue your education,” he assured. “Let us, as parents, teachers, and communities, support our students and ensure this exercise contributes to Ghana’s progress.”
