Ablakwa rejects assertions US deal compromises national security

Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has rejected what he describes as “conspiracy theories” over Ghana’s visa negotiations with the United States, stressing that the country’s sovereignty and security remain secure.

Mr. Ablakwa, who also serves as Member of Parliament for North Tongu, explained that the reversal of US visa restrictions placed on Ghana under the Trump administration was achieved through determined diplomacy, not secret deals.

He urged Ghanaians to ignore “conspiracy theorists and scaremongers” spreading false claims.

“We want to offer full assurances to the people of Ghana,” Mr. Ablakwa said. “Ghana will not be a dumping ground for US removals, and we are not accepting criminals from the US.”

He clarified that the arrangement with Washington involves a very limited number of West African nationals.

“These individuals are pre-vetted, without criminal backgrounds, and their acceptance is consistent with ECOWAS protocols and our Pan-African credentials,” he explained.

He further noted that under regional agreements, West Africans already enjoy visa-free entry into Ghana.

The Foreign Minister stressed that Ghana’s internal stability will not be compromised.

“Our mutually beneficial deal with the US government will not undermine Ghana’s security and stability in any way,” he assured.

Responding to suggestions that talks focused solely on removals, Mr. Ablakwa said the negotiations were broader.

“The discussions I am leading on President Mahama’s instruction include a strong case for a reassessment of the 15% tariff imposed on Ghana,” he noted.

“We are also negotiating a special Ghana-US trade deal, engaging on specific requests from US companies, and holding fruitful talks on the future of AGOA, which is of immense importance to Ghanaian garment companies.”

Mr. Ablakwa reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to protecting the national interest while creating opportunities for growth.

“President Mahama and his team deeply care for you,” he said. “We shall keep working tirelessly to protect Ghana’s strategic interests and ensure that our best efforts benefit all Ghanaians.”
