Assault on student: We won’t tolerate misconduct from teachers – Dr. Apaak

Deputy Minister for Education, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, has stated that misconduct by teachers will not be tolerated.

This follows the circulation of a viral video showing a teacher assaulting a female student at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region.

Reacting to the incident in a Facebook post, Dr. Apaak stated that the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has been directed to conduct a thorough probe into the incident.

“The DG of the GES has been directed to investigate the despicable conduct of the so-called teacher. This is necessary because not everyone teaching in a school is an employee of the GES,” he stated.

Dr. Apaak stressed that while students are expected to exhibit discipline and respect school regulations, teachers and school managers must equally uphold the highest standards of professionalism and conduct.

“Much as we would not accept indiscipline and misconduct from students, so too would we not tolerate the same from teachers and managers of our schools,” he said.

The Deputy Minister further disclosed that the teacher involved in the incident has already been arrested by the police and will face the legal process as investigations continue.

“Even as the GES conducts its investigations, we can report that the said teacher has since been arrested by the police for assault. The law would take its course, and if confirmed that the said teacher is a staff of GES, he would be sanctioned accordingly,” he added.

The incident came to public attention after a video surfaced online allegedly showing a teacher physically confronting a female student on the campus of Nyinahin Catholic SHS. The footage, which quickly went viral, sparked outrage among many Ghanaians and triggered calls for swift intervention by authorities.

The Ghana Education Service has since confirmed that investigations are underway, with the Ashanti Regional Education Directorate expected to submit a detailed report on the matter.

Meanwhile, both the teacher and the student are reportedly undergoing medical examinations as part of ongoing investigations.

The case has intensified discussions on discipline, professionalism and the protection of students within educational institutions, with many stakeholders calling for strict enforcement of standards to ensure safe and conducive learning environments across the country.
