Avoid politicization of LGBT issues, it’s a collective fight – Sam George

Minister for Communications, Samuel Nartey George, has urged political actors to refrain from politicising LGBTQ-related matters, describing the issue as a shared national concern.
He made the call during a conversation with journalists on Friday, emphasising the need for unity in addressing what he framed as a societal challenge rather than a partisan contest.
“I won’t be drawn into a debate of politicization. There is no need for us to politicize this matter,” he stated, stressing that the focus should remain on collective action.
Mr George disclosed that he had recently engaged fellow legislator John Ntim Fordjour on the matter, with both agreeing on the need to reduce political tensions surrounding the debate.
“I had a conversation with him, and we’ve agreed there needs to be a dial down in the politicization,” he said, indicating a willingness among some lawmakers to pursue a more unified approach.
The Ningo-Prampram MP maintained that the issue transcends party affiliations and should not be framed along political lines.
“This is a collective fight. LGBTQ does not know NDC, NPP, CPP. Let’s not play politics with this,” he stressed, calling for cooperation across the political divide.
He further noted that individuals from different political backgrounds who support the proposed legislation should be welcomed, rather than criticised or sidelined.
“To all the signatories who have come on board, they are welcome. This is a collective fight,” he added, underscoring the importance of broad-based support.
Mr George also addressed public commentary suggesting that the matter is being used for political advantage, insisting that such narratives risk undermining efforts to build consensus.
“There is no need for us to bring politics into this,” he reiterated, maintaining that the focus should remain on what he described as protecting shared societal values.
His comments come amid ongoing national discussions on LGBTQ-related legislation, with differing views emerging within political circles over how the issue should be prioritised and handled.
