Berekum Chelsea player killed in gang attack on team bus

A 20-year-old Berekum Chelsea player has died after armed robbers attacked the club’s team bus.
Berekum Chelsea confirmed the death of Dominic Frimpong following the violent incident, which occurred as the team travelled back from a league fixture in Samreboi.
In an earlier statement, the club detailed how the attack unfolded, explaining that their bus was ambushed by armed men who blocked the road and opened fire.
“On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi, our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage,” the club said.
The statement added, “Masked men wielding guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.”
Frimpong was critically injured during the attack and rushed to a nearby health facility. The club indicated earlier that one player had been “badly injured and is receiving medical attention,” but later confirmed he had succumbed to his gunshot wounds.
The shocking development has sent waves across Ghana’s football community, with tributes pouring in for the young player whose career has been abruptly cut short.
The club also expressed appreciation to those who assisted them in the immediate aftermath of the attack, including security personnel and residents in the area.
“We are grateful to the police patrol team for its rapid response,” the statement noted, adding that the town of Ashiresu provided temporary shelter for players and staff.
Officials of Bibiani Gold Stars were also acknowledged for their support during the crisis.
The club further thanked the President of the Ghana Football Association for his prompt intervention following the incident.
Berekum Chelsea said it will continue to provide updates as investigations proceed, while the football fraternity mourns the loss of Dominic Frimpong.
