Black Stars midfielder undergoes successful surgery after fracture in Japan friendly

Ghana midfielder, Francis Abu, has undergone successful surgery after suffering two fractures during the Black Stars’ international friendly against Japan.

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed that the procedure was carried out through a joint effort involving Black Stars medical head Dr. Prince Pamboh, Toulouse FC medical staff, and specialists at Toyota Memorial Hospital in Japan. GFA spokesperson Henry Asante Twum said the collaboration ensured swift and effective treatment for the midfielder.

In its statement, the Association said it is encouraged by the outcome of the operation and by the fact that Abu’s rehabilitation has already begun.

It added that a physiotherapist has been assigned to remain with the player throughout the demanding early phase of his recovery.

The GFA also indicated that arrangements are being made for a senior member of the technical team to accompany Abu to France, where he plays his club football, once he is cleared to leave the hospital.

The Association expressed appreciation to all who have supported the player since the injury, highlighting the contribution of the Black Stars management and technical teams.

It is further assured that continued support will be provided throughout the rehabilitation process to help Abu return to full fitness.

Japan beat Ghana 2–0 in the 2025 Kirin Challenge Cup at Toyota Stadium in Aichi. Takumi Minamino opened the scoring around the 16th minute. Ritsu Doan doubled Japan’s lead in the 60th minute with a left-footed finish. The Asian giants largely controlled the match, using their press and structure to limit Ghana’s chances.

For Ghana, it was a heavily rotated squad. Notably, debutants Joseph Anang (goalkeeper) and Derrick Köhn started.

Ghana has already booked a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup scheduled to take place in North America. Meanwhile, the FA has scheduled international friendlies to take place during the November break.
