BoG extends IMTO registration deadline to July 31

The Bank of Ghana has extended the registration deadline for International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) operating in Ghana to July 31, 2026.
The extension was announced in a notice signed by the Secretary of the Bank, Ms. Aimee Vyda Quashie, on June 12, 2026, and is aimed at giving existing IMTOs additional time to comply with regulatory requirements governing their operations in the country.
According to the Bank of Ghana, the extension follows its earlier notice issued on January 20, 2026, regarding the registration and operations of International Money Transfer Operators. The central bank said all existing IMTOs should use the additional period to regularise their operations and submit the required documentation before the new deadline.
“The deadline for registration under the Guidelines for the Registration and Operations of International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) has been extended to 31st July 2026,” the notice stated.
The Bank stressed that the extension should not be viewed as a waiver of the registration requirements but rather an opportunity for operators to ensure full compliance with the regulatory framework.
It warned that any IMTO that fails to complete the registration process within the stipulated period will not be permitted to operate in Ghana after the deadline.
“For the avoidance of doubt, existing IMTOs that fail to comply with the registration requirements within the stipulated timeframe shall not be permitted to operate in Ghana,” the notice said.
The central bank further cautioned that any existing arrangements or partnerships involving non-compliant IMTOs and regulated financial institutions would cease to have legal effect.
“Consequently, any existing arrangements or partnerships with Banks, Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (SDIs), and Payment Service Providers (PSPs) shall be rendered null and void,” it added.
The Bank also indicated that entities that fail to comply could face additional regulatory and enforcement measures under applicable laws.
Meanwhile, all regulated institutions have been directed to ensure strict adherence to the directive.
The notice further encouraged affected institutions to contact the Bank’s Payment Systems Department for further enquiries or technical assistance.
