Catholic Bishops begin 2025 Plenary Assembly in Damongo

The 2025 Annual Plenary Assembly of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) has commenced in Damongo, the capital of the Savannah Region, with a focus on justice and peace in the country.
This year’s gathering is being held under the theme “A Synodal Church at the Service of Justice and Peace in Ghana.”
The week-long assembly, which runs from November 7 to 14, brings together Catholic Bishops from across the country to deliberate on issues affecting both the Church and the State.
It is hosted by the Bishop of Damongo, Most Rev. Peter Paul Y. Angkyier, and chaired by GCBC President, Most Rev. Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi.
Ahead of the official opening on Monday, November 10, the Bishops began their activities on Saturday with visits to some of the region’s major landmarks.
They toured the Mole National Park and the ancient Larabanga Mosque, one of West Africa’s oldest mosques, where they admired the Savannah Region’s unique cultural and natural heritage.
The day concluded with a luncheon hosted by Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor, Member of Parliament for Damongo and former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
Welcoming the Bishops to his hometown, Mr. Jinapor praised the Church for its commitment to education, peacebuilding, and national development.
“As a born, baptized, confirmed, and practicing Catholic, I am personally humbled by this opportunity,” he said. “I join the faithful in praying for a successful and impactful conference, one that will deepen our faith and renew our collective commitment to national development.”
He also congratulated the Damongo Diocese on its 30th anniversary, which coincides with the Jubilee Year of Hope.
“May this anniversary inspire hope, love, and joy among all the faithful and for our country,” he added.
As part of pre-conference activities, the Bishops paid a courtesy call on Damongo Wura Seidu Kelly Boresa I, Paramount Chief of the Damongo Traditional Area.
The visit strengthened the Church’s bond with traditional authorities in promoting peace and development.
The Plenary Assembly will officially open at the Unity Center in Damongo and close on November 14 at St. Anne’s Cathedral.
