Diesel price projected to hit GH¢19.07, petrol at GH¢16.26 from Sept. 16 – COPEC

Consumers are set to face higher fuel prices from Wednesday, September 16, 2026, following a projection by the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC).

The development was announced by the Chamber in a statement dated Sunday, September 13, 2026, ahead of the second pricing window for September.

According to COPEC, diesel is expected to record the biggest increase, rising by 10.23% from the current average of GH¢17.30 per litre to GH¢19.07. Petrol is also projected to increase by 4.24% from GH¢15.60 to GH¢16.26 per litre, while Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is expected to sell at GH¢15.32 per kilogramme.

The expected increases come against the backdrop of rising international crude oil prices, which climbed from US$89.30 to US$103.07 per barrel during the latest pricing period.

COPEC said the international Free on Board (FOB) price of diesel increased by 12.33%, from US$1,250.50 to US$1,404.73 per metric tonne. Petrol also recorded a 10.08% increase in its FOB price, moving from US$1,136.50 to US$1,251.07 per metric tonne.

The Ghana cedi, meanwhile, appreciated marginally by 0.29% against the US dollar, with the average interbank rate improving from GH¢11.5166 to GH¢11.4830 to the dollar.

Against this backdrop, COPEC has called on Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to absorb part of the increase by reducing their margins to ease the pressure on consumers.

“Again, it is the expectation of COPEC that OMCs will shelve some of their margins in order not to overburden consumers in the face of these expected steep prices.”

The Chamber also appealed to government to accelerate the expansion of the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) from its current 45,000 barrels per day capacity to 100,000 barrels per day.

According to COPEC, increasing TOR’s capacity would help reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported finished petroleum products.

For the second pricing window, diesel is expected to sell within a range of GH¢18.12 to GH¢20.02 per litre, while petrol could range between GH¢15.44 and GH¢17.08 per litre.
