Dr Apaak: 80,000 teachers to receive salaries based on promotions from Jan 2026

Deputy Education Minister, Dr. Clement Abas Apaak, says close to 80,000 teachers who passed their promotion examinations will be placed on the appropriate salary scales with a start date of January 2026.

He disclosed this after an emergency meeting with the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Vocational and Technical Teachers Association (VTAC) and other teacher unions.

The meeting followed concerns from the unions over the processes for placing teachers who had passed their promotion examinations on the correct salary scales, with the unions threatening to withdraw their services.

Dr. Apaak said the discussions resolved the two main issues raised by the teachers: the requirement to submit additional documentation and the effective date of the promotions.

“Before I bring my comments to a close, the issues were mainly two. The issue of teachers providing documentation as a prerequisite to put them on the right salary scale based on the promotions that they have legitimately earned and the second was the start date which has also been addressed.”

He said teachers would no longer be required to visit district and regional education offices with payslips and other documents before their promotions could be processed.

“The agreement is that all teachers who wrote the promotion exams and passed will have a start date of January 2026.”

The Deputy Minister said the arrangement would enable affected teachers to receive salaries corresponding to their new ranks.

“It is our expectation that close to 80,000 teachers would be placed on the right salary scales and receive the expected salaries as per their promotions.”

Dr. Apaak also announced that the agreement had averted a possible disruption to teaching and learning in pre-tertiary schools.

“The outcome of the meeting has been positive and we can announce that the teacher unions have agreed to continue doing their work and that means that teaching and learning in our pre-tertiary institutions would continue.”

The resolution follows concerns over delays and administrative requirements surrounding teacher promotions.

Government said the agreement with the unions would ensure the process moves forward while keeping teaching and learning uninterrupted.
