Dr. Apaak slams government over ECG mismanagement and indebtedness

Dr. Clement Apaak, Member of Parliament for Builsa South, has expressed shock and disappointment over the recent revelations of corruption and mismanagement at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Speaking on Metro TV, Dr. Apaak questioned how such scandals could occur in a country with a functioning government and institutions.

“How is this possible? How can this be happening?” Dr. Apaak asked, referencing the ECG’s indebtedness to the IPVC, which stands at approximately $2 billion. He also highlighted the monthly revenue shortfalls, with ECG generating only $800 million out of a potential $2 billion.

Dr. Apaak pointed to questionable decisions, such as procuring light crude oil through “crony companies” instead of using cheaper natural gas.

Additionally, he criticized the replacement of a tested ECG-developed app with an untested one, allegedly to improve globalization.

“This is high-level corruption, where the people of this country are being duped by those in power,” Dr. Apaak stated. He recalled the PDS fiasco, which cost Ghana $190 million, and questioned the government’s complicity in these scandals.

“The only solution, as John Jinapor said, is for this government to be given the red card,” Dr. Apaak concluded, emphasizing the need for accountability.
