Elections Are About Counting Heads, Not Cutting Heads – Sammy Gyamfi
Sammy Gyamfi, National Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), addressed a press conference at the NDC’s headquarters, expressing concerns about potential election rigging and violence in the upcoming Ghanaian elections.
According to him, the NDC has received credible reports that Brigadier-General Michael Opoku, the General Officer Commanding of the Central Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, is involved in a plot to rig the election in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). Gyamfi cited Brigadier-General Opoku’s past actions, including his role in the infamous Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-election violence, where many innocent Ghanaians were shot, brutalized, and maimed, as evidence of his capability to carry out such actions.
The NDC claims that Opoku has been mandated by President Akufo-Addo to oversee a scheme to rig the election through ballot stuffing, swapping of ballot boxes, and other clandestine activities, particularly in the Ashanti Region . The party also alleges that Opoku’s residence in Kumasi is being used to store weapons, illegally printed ballot papers, and other election materials.
Gyamfi emphasized that elections should be about counting heads, not cutting heads, and no person should lose their life on the altar of elections. The NDC has called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief of Defence Staff to investigate these allegations and ensure peace during and after the elections.
“Elections are about counting heads and not cutting heads. No person must lose his or her life on the altar of elections,” Gyamfi stressed.
