Final funeral rites of late Asantehemaa underway

The funeral of the late Asantehemaa, Nana Ama Konadu Yiadom III, who passed away last month, is underway at Manhyia, Kumasi, as Asanteman bids farewell to their queen.

The 98-year-old Nana Konadu Yiadom III, who reigned for eight years, died on Thursday, August 7, 2025. She was born in 1927.

Today’s event is expected to be attended by the Asantehene, Otumfour Osei Tutu II, chiefs of the Ashanti kingdom, and well-wishers from across Ghana and Africa.

Senior government officials and politicians are also due to be at Manhyia to commiserate with the Asantehene and the royal family.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III, at the age of 90, succeeded Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II in 2017.

Nana Konadu Yiadom III was the elder sister of Otumfuo Osei Tutu and the daughter of Nana Afia Kobi Serwaa Ampem II, who passed away at age 109 on November 15, 2016, after reigning for 39 years as Asantehemaa.

The Asantehemaa occupied a revered position in Asante culture, serving as the mother of the Asantehene and custodian of key traditions.

Her funeral is expected to draw thousands of mourners,  traditional leaders, and dignitaries, making the ARCC’s measures crucial for maintaining order and preserving the solemnity of the occasion.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council (ARCC) has announced a series of directives to guide government workers and institutions during the funeral and burial rites of the late Asantehemaa.

In a public statement signed by Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the ARCC emphasized that all essential government workers are to appear in official uniforms and carry valid identification cards.

A further directive called for strict adherence to movement restrictions, with the ARCC underscoring the need for cooperation with security agencies.

In a public statement signed by Ashanti Regional Minister, Hon. Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the ARCC emphasized that all essential government workers are to appear in official uniforms and carry valid identification cards.

“All essential government workers must wear their official service uniforms and carry valid identification cards,” the statement read.

The Council noted that the directive is intended to ensure proper identification and smooth coordination during the period of mourning.
