Fisherman remanded for stealing GH¢50,800 and phones

A 21-year-old fisherman, Michael Dodoo, has been remanded into police custody by the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly stealing GH¢50,800 and two mobile phones from a businessman’s vehicle parked in front of the UBA Bank at Accra Central.

The incident reportedly occurred on September 20, 2025, when the complainant, Seidu Mohammed, a businessman based in Koforidua, left his Opel vehicle unlocked to buy tea from a vendor across the road. In the vehicle was a bag containing GH¢50,800 and two Tecno mobile phones valued at GH¢3,500.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, Dodoo and three accomplices — identified only as Prince, Amuquaye, and Sadiku — noticed the unattended car and conspired to steal from it. They opened the front door and made away with the cash and phones before fleeing the scene.

Police investigations revealed that the suspects, all residents of James Town in Accra, were part of a group known for breaking into vehicles parked around the central business district. Acting on intelligence, the police arrested Dodoo, who was found in possession of two Tecno phones identified by the complainant as his.

During interrogation, Dodoo allegedly admitted to participating in the theft but claimed the group fought among themselves while attempting to share the stolen money. He reportedly told police that one of the suspects, Amuquaye, took custody of the cash, promising to divide it later, but has since gone into hiding.

The prosecution stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the three remaining suspects. Dodoo has been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful entry, and stealing.

He pleaded not guilty before the court presided over by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit. The case has been adjourned to October 20, 2025, as investigations continue into the whereabouts of his accomplices and the missing cash.
