Former Agriculture Minister Ibrahim Adam dies

Ghana’s political and agricultural communities are mourning the death of former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Alhaji Ibrahim Adam, whose decades long career took him from agricultural administration to senior government, Parliament and public service.

The former Choggu/Tishigu Member of Parliament reportedly passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2026, with details surrounding the circumstances of his death yet to be officially announced by his family.

Tributes have, however, begun pouring in for the veteran politician, who played prominent roles in Ghana’s agricultural sector during the Provisional National Defence Council era and the early years of the Fourth Republic.

Sagnarigu Member of Parliament, Atta Issah, was among those who publicly mourned the former minister, describing him as a mentor whose life and service had left a lasting impression.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Hon. Ibrahim Adam,” he said in a tribute, offering his condolences to the former minister’s family, the people of the Northern Region and the National Democratic Congress.

The MP said he had learned from Ibrahim Adam’s “wisdom, dedication, and service,” praying that Allah would grant him mercy and receive him into Jannah.

Ibrahim Adam was an accomplished agricultural professional before entering frontline politics.

An animal scientist and agricultural expert, he held a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and received further professional training in areas including rice production, administration and management.

His career in agriculture included working as an Assistant Farm Manager at Nasia Farms and serving as Secretary General of the Tamale Rice Growers Association.

His experience in the sector later led him into government, where he served in agricultural positions during the PNDC administration before becoming Deputy Secretary for Agriculture with responsibility for crops.

He subsequently rose to become Secretary for Agriculture and later Minister for Food and Agriculture under the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Following his years in the executive, Ibrahim Adam entered parliamentary politics and represented the Choggu/Tishigu Constituency from 1997 to 2001.

His public service extended beyond government and Parliament, as he also served as Board Chairman of the Agricultural Development Bank, contributing to the governance of one of Ghana’s key institutions for agricultural financing and development.

His death marks the loss of a veteran public servant whose career spanned agriculture, government, Parliament and public administration.

As tributes continue to emerge, Ibrahim Adam is being remembered for his years of service and his contribution to the development of Ghana’s agricultural and political sectors.
