FOSDA congratulates new IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno

The Foundation for Security and Development in Africa (FOSDA) has congratulated COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno on his appointment as the Inspector General of Police.

In a statement signed by the Executive Director for FOSDA, Theodora W. Anti indicated that COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno has dedicated a significant portion of his professional life to the Ghana Police Service and demonstrated exceptional leadership across various assignments, “we believe this appointment is well-deserved.”

“FOSDA believes this appointment is a vital step for the police force as it pursues transformation and improved public trust, leading to safer communities and a more peaceful Ghana.

“FOSDA urges IGP Yohuno to persist with initiatives that advance public safety and the integrity of the police service. The Media Violence Incidents Monitoring Reports published by FOSDA since 2022 reveal notable efforts to address crime and violence throughout the country,” Madam Williams Anti stated.

She continued: “Our data indicates an estimated 400 cases of violent incidents in 2022, 453 cases in 2023, and 379 cases in 2024 with Ashanti, Central, and Greater Accra as the top three hotspots. The decline of the cases from 452 in 2023 to 379 in 2024 suggests that various reforms implemented by the Ghana Police Service, such as the establishment of Police Intelligence nit and police visibility initiative is yielding results.”

Madam Williams Anit also urged the new Inspector General of Police to exercise maximum, deliberate, and focused efforts to sustain the downward trend in violent incidents across the Country.

“We also encourage the IGP to collaborate and work more closely with the Civil Society Organisations and the media to create the needed partnerships for an improved force and peace and security in Ghana. A closed door to civil society and the media as experienced in the previous regime is detrimental to civilian–police relations.

“Finally, we urge the IGP to adopt a gender policy that will improve the work environment for all officers in the service, especially female officers as well as the Women Peace and Security Agenda.”
