GES directs regional directors to disburse capitation grants by October 30

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed regional directors of education to ensure that capitation grants for the first term of the 2026/2027 academic year reach schools by Friday, October 30, 2026.
The directive follows the transfer of the funds to the accounts of district education directorates for onward disbursement to schools.
In a letter dated October 16, 2026, and addressed to all regional directors of education, the GES said the release was intended to enable heads of basic schools to operate without disruption.
“Management of Ghana Education Service wishes to inform you that Capitation Grant for 1st term 2026/2027 academic year has been transferred to the various accounts of the District Education Directorates for onward disbursement to the schools,” the letter stated.
The Service said the transfers to district accounts included the sports and culture component for district offices, while the corresponding components for regional offices had been transferred to their designated accounts.
Regional directors have therefore been tasked with ensuring that the funds reach schools before the deadline.
“Regional Directors are therefore by this letter, requested to ensure that the funds are transferred to the schools on or before Friday, 30th October, 2026, to enable Heads of Basic Schools operate seamlessly,” the letter added.
The GES has also scheduled a monitoring exercise in the regions for the first week of November 2026 to ensure compliance with the directive.
“Kindly take note that a team from the Headquarters will be going to the regions for monitoring in the first week of November 2026, so please ensure that the funds are transferred to the schools immediately,” the letter stated.
The letter was signed by Munawaru Issahaque (PhD), Deputy Director-General in charge of Quality and Access, for the Director-General.
The capitation grant is a government funding mechanism designed to support the operations of public basic schools and ease the financial burden on parents.
