GES interdicts Obuasi SHTS headmaster, directs handover to Regional Director

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has directed Obuasi Senior High Technical School headmaster Zakaria Abdulai to hand over the management of the school to the Regional Director of Education after interdicting him over allegations of sexual misconduct involving students.
The directive, announced on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, takes immediate effect while a full-scale investigation into the allegations is conducted.
The Service said Mr Abdulai must make himself available to assist with the investigation and will remain on interdiction pending its outcome.
The GES confirmed the action in a statement issued by its Public Relations Unit.
“Mr Abdulai has consequently been directed to proceed on interdiction with immediate effect and to make himself available to assist with the investigation.”
The Service also confirmed that a complaint had been lodged with the police.
“A complaint has been logged with the Police as well.”
The interdiction follows an earlier directive by the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, calling for the suspension of the headmaster over the allegations.
The Minister directed the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service to take the necessary steps to suspend Mr Abdulai pending a full investigation into the matter.
Mr. Iddrisu also requested the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters to commence investigations into the allegations.
The subsequent decision by the GES to interdict the headmaster and direct him to hand over his duties comes a day after the Minister’s intervention.
The GES said the alleged incident reportedly triggered a student rampage that resulted in damage to school property and the temporary closure of the institution.
“The alleged incident reportedly triggered a student rampage, resulting in the destruction of school property and other items, and the subsequent temporary closure of the school.”
Following the unrest, six students were reportedly arrested in connection with the destruction of school property, with three subsequently remanded by a court.
The interdiction and handover directive mean Mr. Abdulai will no longer manage the school while investigations are ongoing.
GES said its response forms part of its commitment to protecting students and staff and maintaining professional standards in schools.
