Ghana’s leadership in healthcare delivery and vaccine advocacy has once again taken the spotlight as President John Dramani Mahama engaged with global health stakeholders ahead of the Gavi Vaccine Alliance pledging session in Brussels.
In a strong show of international cooperation, President Mahama held bilateral meetings with Gavi Board Chair, José Manuel Barroso, and renowned philanthropist and co-founder of Microsoft, Mr. Bill Gates. The engagements focused on deepening collaboration to strengthen healthcare systems and ensure equitable access to vaccines worldwide.

Mr. Barroso praised Ghana’s ongoing commitment to global immunization efforts and lauded President Mahama’s role as a consistent champion for vaccine equity. He underscored the importance of Ghana’s voice in the upcoming pledging session.
During his meeting with Mr. Gates, President Mahama shared Ghana’s achievements in the health sector, citing the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare programme, progress by the National Vaccine Institute, and the significant benefits of uncapping the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIS). The President acknowledged the critical support provided by the Gates Foundation in advancing health outcomes in Ghana and beyond.
These high-level talks come as countries and development partners converge in Brussels to secure funding for life-saving vaccines through Gavi, a global alliance committed to immunizing millions of children in the world’s poorest countries.
President Mahama’s participation reaffirms Ghana’s position as a leading voice in shaping global health priorities and fostering partnerships that deliver real impact.
