GNFS begins nationwide checks on vehicle fire extinguishers
The Ghana National Fire Service has rolled out a nationwide compliance exercise to ensure all vehicles operating on Ghanaian roads are equipped with functional fire extinguishers.
The initiative, which commenced on December 18, 2025, is aimed at improving road safety and minimising damage and loss resulting from vehicle fires.
The exercise is being carried out by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service.
Teams will conduct roadside inspections to verify the presence, condition, and accessibility of fire extinguishers in vehicles.
As part of the operation, officers will issue certification tags to compliant vehicles and offer practical guidance to drivers on the proper use and maintenance of fire extinguishers.
The programme also features targeted engagements with transport unions and driver associations to strengthen awareness of fire prevention and emergency response on the roads.
Vehicle owners and drivers are required to carry at least one GNFS-certified extinguisher that is securely mounted and in good working condition.
The Fire Service also reminded motorists of the need to maintain other essential safety items, including warning triangles and first-aid kits.
The GNFS explained that the availability of a working fire extinguisher within easy reach can prevent small mechanical faults or fuel-related incidents from developing into major accidents.
The Service noted that the compliance exercise forms part of broader efforts to protect lives and property and to promote a culture of safety across Ghana’s road transport system.
