Government secures funds to speed up Pokuase–Nsawam road project

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has assured motorists and transport operators that ongoing works on the Pokuase–Nsawam stretch of the Accra–Kumasi highway will now progress without further interruptions.
This follows the release of GH¢809 million to the project contractor, a move officials say clears all outstanding debts and paves the way for full-scale construction to continue. The Controller and Accountant General, Kwasi Agyei, confirmed the payment on August 4, 2025, explaining that the funds were critical to resolving the months-long standoff that halted work on the busy corridor.
For several months, motorists endured heavy traffic and long delays due to stalled construction. The situation heightened tensions among transport operators, with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) issuing a one-week ultimatum to the government to restore work or face a suspension of services. The resumed activity on the road came just days before the deadline expired.
Addressing the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament on Wednesday, August 20, Deputy Roads Minister Alhassan Suhuyini apologised to commuters for the inconvenience.
“We are deeply sorry for the frustration motorists have faced,” he said. “When we assumed office, the contractor had already abandoned the site due to unpaid arrears. Since then, we have worked closely with the Finance Ministry to secure funds to bring him back.”
Mr. Suhuyini assured the public that the contractor is now fully mobilised and committed to completing the project. “This isn’t going to be a nine-day wonder; the contractor is back on site to stay,” he stated.
The ministry says it remains focused on delivering the project within schedule to ease congestion and improve road safety along one of the country’s busiest highways.
With funds secured and construction back on track, officials are optimistic that the project will be completed on time to bring relief to thousands of commuters who rely on the route daily.
